Small Comforts

 1. Herbal Tea: I find a steaming cup of tea to be so comforting, plus it helps keep you hydrated. I like green tea with honey, honey lemon ginger, and vanilla rooibos.

2. Cup of Water: it's important to stay hydrated if you have a migraine, and water can help flush your system.

3. Ice Pack: I rotate a few ice packs, one on my head and a few in the freezer. This one has a velcro elastic wrap so I can actually wrap it around my head and it stays in place!

Here I also have added my trusty sunglasses which I put on to leave the darkness of my room (which happens often on account of all the tea I drink) and a rice bag which I heat up because my feet have been getting cold, which I think may be a side effect from the meds I am on.

Does anyone else have a little comfort that helps them through the day when they have a migraine? My cat recently died but I used to cuddle up to her and listen to her purring, that always put me in a better mood.

Day 38

Today marks the 38th day I have had this migraine. I can hardly remember what my head feels like without a constant throbbing pressure behind my sinuses and temples. My body is so weak and tired, my head is cloudy and unfocused, and the constant pain just never stops. I force myself out of bed to shower and eat, then my days are spent napping, wandering around my house, hiding from sources of light, interspersed with trips to the doctor or hospital, visits from friends and cuddles from my boyfriend.

I've tried what feels like everything to end this migraine:

Rescue Meds:

  • Imatrex
  • Relpax
  • Frovatriptan
  • Maxaran
  • DHE (dihydroergotamine)

Pain Meds:

  • Morphine
  • Tylenol 3 with codeine
  • Dilaudid
  • Extra strength ibuprofen
  • Tramadol

Other:

  • Gravol
  • Benadryl
  • Cortisol
  • Prednisone
  • Relatene
  • Propafol
  • Reglan
  • Weed

Many of these were taken intravenously at the hospital. I've been 5 times now, and while the doctors are all trying to be helpful and listen to what I say, it's obvious that something else has to be done. I feel like a zombie on the Topamax. I shower sitting down now because I am scared I am going to fall over when I close my eyes. My limbs feel heavy, my breathing is labored and I can hardly make it out of bed, this medication just slows everything down. The one thing I've found helpful is smoking weed. It makes me feel less nauseous, the migraine pain is pushed to the back of my mind, and it definitely puts me in a better mood.

Anyways, to pass some time I thought I would start a blog, see if anyone else has similar stories to my own and possibly (hopefully) share strategies for coping with migraines. Comment if you have a similar story or any questions!
